Skilled Migration - SMIPA

Skilled Migration Internship Program ACCOUNTING.

The Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting (SMIPA) is a professional year program approved by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), available to overseas students who have an Australian accounting degree qualification as a result of at least two years' study in Australia. 

SMIPA involves: 

SMIPA was developed by CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants, and is delivered by registered providers who have been approved by all three professional accounting bodies.
The professional accounting bodies do not have a financial interest, direct or indirect in SMIPA, and do not gain any financial benefit from SMIPA. Enrolment in any of the accounting bodies’ professional programs is independent of an individual’s participation in SMIPA or any other DIAC approved pathways to permanent residency.

SMIPA aims to achieve learning outcomes that would enhance the ability of a graduate to:

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
SMIPA is an option for overseas students who have obtained an Australian accounting degree qualification as a result of at least two years' study in Australia and hold or have applied for a 485 Graduate visa.
Graduates of Australian accounting degree programs will continue to have the option to complete the Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting (SMIPA) and gain an assessment that can be used to apply for general skilled migration (GSM). The professional accounting bodies wish to reassure graduates of Australian accounting degree programs that you still have an opportunity to increase their English language proficiency and/or to complete this recognised professional year program.
From 1 July, 2010, graduates of Australian accounting degree programs who receive an assessment showing that you have:

will be able to use your assessment to apply for a 485 visa. You will be able to use the 485 visa period to either gain an IELTS Academic band score of at least seven (7) and/or to complete the Skilled Migration Internship Program: Accounting (SMIPA).

During 2012 QIBA will offer SMIPA classes on a Saturday &/or Sunday at the following locations

Please Note: 
1.  A non-refundable Application Fee of $250 is also payable at the time of lodging your application. Your application will not be processed until such time as you pay your application fee.
2.  To be eligible for the respective discount for Options A, B & C you must pay the respective instalment on time and in full. Late or partial payment of the respective instalment due will automatically cancel the discount and the full fee will apply.

On which day will the SMIPA course be offered?
Participants will be required to attend on average, 8 hours per week over the 33 week coursework component:  Classes are held on either a Saturday or Sunday  (8:30am to 12:30pm, 1:15pm to 4:15pm, 4:45pm to 5:45pm)

Expectations of SMIPA Intern:

  1. The Intern will be treated as any other employer of the host and is required to abide by the host employer’s:
    • Work practices
    • Work timetables
    • Working hours and punctuality
    • OHSE policies
    • Codes of practice including dress codes, courtesy and respect
  2. The intern will be covered by insurance for injury as a consequence of internship workplace injury
  3. The intern is able to cease internship and transfer to an alternative internship with permission from QIBA only if there is a genuine and valid cause to do so. Failure to adhere to host employer workplace requirements may lead to cancellation of the internship.
  4. The intern is expected to work whilst receiving no salary or wage from the host employer
  5. Interns agree to strict confidentiality in relation to any information relating to the host employer

Responsibilities of the Intern:

  1. Follow punctuality and host workplace practices
  2. Follow professional and ethical codes of behaviour
  3. Maintain regular contact with QIBA’s internship manager via email and telephone
  4. To work the minimum hours and weeks required by the QIBA SMIPA requirements
  5. To keep a journal or written summary of the internship experience
