English For Teaching Young Learners.

English for Teaching Young Learners* (TESOL)

(*This course is not part of the Australian Qualifications Framework)

This is a program of English Language Development and Language
Teaching Methodology for International students with an interest
in working with young learners from Non-English speaking
backgrounds and for teachers who are required to teach English
Language in mainstream schools or deliver after-school tutoring
programs in their country.

Course aims
• The course aims to develop effective communication strategies for teaching purposes and general classroom management. This will allow the trainee teacher to ‘engage' learners through meaningful interaction and feedback in English language, providing an ‘immersion' experience for the learners.
• The course further aims to introduce trainees to the knowledge of concepts related to language, language use and the background to and practice of language teaching and learning, involving ‘young learners'. This gives the trainee teachers a broad-based general professional knowledge in the TESOL field.
• The course also helps prepare trainees for the Cambridge University ‘Teaching Knowledge Test' and for participation in further English Teacher training programs, such as the Certificate IV in TESOL.

Course structure - the course is divided into 7 units:
• Unit 1: Language analysis
Trainees learn how to analyze spoken and written language and to explain grammatical features to young language learners, using concrete examples.
• Unit 2: Language for the teacher
Trainees develop communicative competence for effective classroom interaction and for managing language games and activities for young learners.
• Unit 3: Young Learner background
Trainees learn the basic theory of Language acquisition and learning styles in young learners as well as how to motivate and engage them in successful English language learning..
• Unit 4: Teaching Knowledge Test preparation
Trainees prepare for the 3 content modules of the Cambridge University Language Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).
• Unit 5: EYL Lesson planning
Trainees become familiar with the generic structure of effective language lessons and learn to plan and deliver various lesson stages and activities for young learners.
• Unit 6: TESOL Materials
Trainees become familiar with a range of TESOL resources for young learners and learn how to adapt or make their own teaching materials.
• Unit 7: Practice teaching & Classroom management
