PowerLanguage

The methodology of
is based on the ‘immersion’ philosophy of language acquisition which holds that learners who are using English Language as a tool for learning real life subjects and content (such as life skills, employment and business skills) engage more deeply with the language than learners who just learn about the language and grammar.

activates three important (powerful) skill areas through language interactive tasks and activities. These are:
- Community & Life Skills (Power 1)
These skills are essential for survival in an English speaking country and include: beach safety, using public transport, understanding rental agreements, negotiating with service staff, using sport and recreation facilities, hiring a car, etc. Success with English in the Australian speech community and everyday living through

- Research and Study Skills (Power 2)
These skills are essential for information technology and further international study. They include research-based learning strategies, using multi-media resources and community libraries, using computer software for professional reports and electronic presentations. Students also learn techniques for analysing their language errors (e.g. ‘dictogloss’) and increase their vocabulary through weekly ‘revision lists’ and ‘grammar-glossaries’ provided as part of the
program in the three skill areas (community & life skills; research & study skills; employment & business skills).
- Employment & Business Skills (Power 3)
These skills can assist international students in getting part-time or casual employment in Australia, while they study full-time on a student visa. They are also aimed at future employment in multi-national corporations where English is one of the mainstream languages. The following are included: job-seeking skills using newspapers and visiting workplaces, using computer technology to prepare a Curriculum Vitae, as well as completing formal business units in the area of business communication, marketing, customer service and management. This
approach ensures that the English language acquired is useful for business purposes and that it suits employers globally.
